Teineisha “Luna Red” Richards is an Afro-Indigenous R&B/Soul artist and songwriter based in Bear River First Nation in Mi’kma’ki (Nova Scotia). Blending contemporary R&B and soul with pop and hip-hop influences, Luna Red creates music rooted in storytelling, movement and emotional expression. Her work explores identity, motherhood, healing, empowerment, cultural memory, oppression, ancestral connection and the relationship between people, spirit and land.

Born and raised in Toronto (Tkaronto), Luna Red’s artistry is shaped by her Mi’kmaq and Afro-Jamaican heritage and a multidisciplinary creative background spanning music, dance, choreography, directing and visual storytelling. Movement was one of her earliest forms of creative expression, leading to an extensive professional dance career across live stages, touring and music productions. Her credits include performing as an opening dancer during Bruno Mars’ 2016 Canadian tour and appearances in music videos by Sean Paul, Trey Songz and RedOne, among others.

As Luna Red developed her own voice as a recording artist, she began bringing those creative disciplines together. She directed and choreographed visual work for her original songs “Lost Tribe” and “Runnin’,” both presented through the imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival. Her relationship with imagineNATIVE also extended behind the scenes through several years working within the Indigenous arts sector, most recently as Outreach & Events Manager. In 2023, she performed at Nuit Blanche Toronto, reflecting a creative practice in which music, movement, performance and visual storytelling remain deeply connected.

Her 2023 EP, Journey To Self, documented a period of personal transformation through songs including “Runnin’,” “Rise Up,” “Culture” and “Divine.” The project reflected an artist searching inward, confronting experiences that had shaped her and using music as a space for healing, expression and empowerment.

But the journey did not end with finding herself.

After relocating from Toronto to Bear River First Nation, Luna Red entered another period of transformation. Reconnecting with community, culture, ancestry and the land began to shift how she understood belonging and identity. Motherhood deepened that evolution, bringing themes of matriarchy, legacy, nurturing, protection and intergenerational strength more fully into her work.

At the same time, Luna Red continued building her presence within Atlantic Canada’s music community. She has participated in the Mi’kmaq Artist Emergence Program (MAEP) as both an artist and mentor and performed at the 2025 Nova Scotia Music Week MAEP Showcase. At the 2026 East Coast Music Awards in Sydney, Nova Scotia, she performed across three showcases, including Two For The Show/ECMA Export, Black Vibes presented by ANSMA and the ECMA Hip Hop Showcase, while also participating in ECMA Export meetings, networking and professional development.

These experiences lead into Luna Red’s next six-song EP, Still Becoming, developed alongside JUNO Award-winning songwriter and producer Corey Le Rue and Adrian Morris of internationally touring Canadian pop act Neon Dreams.

The title captures the heart of this stage in Luna Red’s life. Still Becoming is not about arriving at a finished version of herself. It is about recognizing that identity, healing, motherhood, artistry and self-discovery continue to evolve. The project brings together contemporary R&B, soul and pop while exploring freedom, self-love, cultural memory, matriarchy, resilience, reconnection and the process of reclaiming parts of ourselves that can become buried beneath life’s experiences.

Among the project’s songs is “Heart Bass,” an energetic celebration of movement, freedom and living fully in the moment. For an artist whose earliest creative language was dance, the song reconnects Luna Red’s musical voice with physical expression, joy and the freedom that comes from being completely present.

“The Land Remembers” reaches into another dimension of that journey. The song emerged from Luna Red’s experience of feeling a profound connection to the land and to ancestors after years of living away from her Indigenous community. Rather than simply representing a return to a physical place, the experience revealed something deeper: beneath the layers accumulated through life and imposed through systems of oppression, there is a spirit and connection that were never erased.

For Luna Red, the land became a reminder of who she is beneath those layers: of strength, light, divinity and an ancestral connection that exists beyond geography. “The Land Remembers” speaks to rising above forces that have attempted to diminish, displace or disconnect people from that knowledge and reclaiming the power within ourselves. Through that realization came a deeper understanding of belonging: wherever she goes, she remains connected through land, ancestry and spirit.

The song’s meaning eventually expanded beyond Luna Red’s own experience. She later dedicated “The Land Remembers” to MMIWG2S+, recognizing the power of remembrance for those whose lives, stories and humanity have too often been overlooked, erased or forgotten. Even when people, institutions or systems fail to remember them, the land remembers them too. What began as a personal experience of reconnection therefore became an expression of ancestral and collective remembrance.

Luna Red’s music has received radio support from CBC Afterdark, CBC The Block, IndigiVERSE Radio and independent U.S. radio, alongside coverage from Canadian and international music media. Following her appearances at the 2026 ECMAs, she was selected as an official showcasing artist for Nova Scotia Music Week 2026 in Truro, Nova Scotia, continuing the momentum surrounding this new chapter of her career.

As Still Becoming enters the world, Luna Red is focused on expanding her audience and live performance career, developing touring, publishing and sync opportunities, and continuing to bring her multidisciplinary background into her work.

For Luna Red, music has become more than an outlet. It is a space to confront what has been buried, release what no longer serves her, question larger systems, celebrate joy and movement, and give voice to experiences that extend beyond herself. By bringing together music, movement, motherhood, ancestry and lived experience, she continues to create work that speaks to resilience, freedom and the power of remembering who we are.

Still Becoming is both the name of the project and the truth at the centre of it: there is no final version of who we are. We are always becoming.

Current Project

Luna Red is preparing for the release of her forthcoming EP, Still Becoming, developed alongside JUNO Award-winning songwriter and producer Corey Le Rue and Adrian Morris of internationally touring Canadian pop act Neon Dreams. Blending contemporary R&B, soul, and pop, the project explores themes of motherhood, cultural identity, ancestral connection, joy, healing, and empowerment.

Following recent performances at the 2026 East Coast Music Awards (ECMAs), Luna Red is focused on expanding her touring career, securing sync placements in film, television, and media, and sharing Still Becoming with audiences across Canada and beyond.
